Episode 1 Types of Bonds
James Bond.
How do atoms make molecules?
A bond holds two atoms together. Two or more bonded atoms are a molecule.
Ionic bonds happen when an electron is transferred from on atom to another, and then the + and - atoms attract to each other.
Covalent bonds happen when two atoms share a pair of electrons.
-Nonpolar covalent bond is when the electrons are shared equally.
-Polar covalent bond is when the electrons unequally.
What about metallic bonds? Well the electrons in metals can kind of cruise around and aren't attached to a single nucleus. That's all we need to know.
Episode 2 How Many Bonds?
James Bonds.
The Octet Rule describes how all atoms "want" 8 electrons in their outer share.
Atoms with share, steal, or give away electrons to form bonds and get the Octet.
Draw the Lewis Structure and then look for unpaired valence electrons to figure out home many bonds an atom will usually make.
Read up on how many bonds atoms make.
You might also want to review how to draw Lewis Structures.
Episode 3 Polar & Nonpolar Bears Bonds
Shaken. Not stirred.
Read up on examples of polar and nonpolar molecules.
Use your new polar/nonpolar chemistry knowledge to explain what is going on in these Appetizer Experiments.
Episode 4 Chemical Structures
With Bonds. James Bond.
Nonpolar stuff mixes with nonpolar stuff. Polar stuff mixes with polar stuff. Is there any way to mix oil and water??
