Episode 1 - Hierarchy of Life
How is life organized?
The biological hierarchy is a series of levels that can be used to "zoom in" and see how living things are organized.
Organism - a living thing
Organ System - group of organs that work together
Organ- self contained part of an organ that has a function
Tissue - groups of cells that make up an organ.
Cell- basic smallest unit of all known living organisms
Biomolecule- carbon based molecules that carry out functions in the cell.
Episode 2 Molecules of Life
What is life made of?
Living things use 4 categories of biomolecules (also called macromolecules) to have structure and carry out functions: Carbohydrates, Lipds (fats), Proteins, and Nucleic Acids (DNA). Get a McPick 2 to learn about each of the biomolecules. Yeah, you'll need to memorize these guys too. You can see them all the time on nutrition labels though!
Episode 3
How do cells divide and specialize?
Mitosis is the process of one cell making a copy of its DNA and then dividing into two separate cells. Get a McPick 2 to learn about the steps of mitosis. Look specifically for the "input" (how it starts) and the "output" (what is there at the end. You won't need to memorize all the phases of mitosis.
Is this a good model of mitosis?
Why or why not?
Episode 4
How do cells get energy?
Cellular respiration is an exothermic chemical reaction. Food+oxygen ---> Carbon dioxide+Water+Usable energy
There is a crazy amount of details and steps to the full process of getting energy from food! Super cool. You won't need to memorize things like the the electron transport chain or Kreb cycle, but you will need to know the balanced chemical equation of cellular respiration. Get a McPick 2 and start learning!
